Let’s start at the beginning with a definition…
What is a Yoga Teacher Training Course?
A yoga teacher training course is a program designed to equip individuals with the knowledge, skills, and experience needed to become a certified yoga instructor. These courses typically cover various aspects of yoga, including its philosophy, anatomy, alignment, teaching techniques, and maybe meditation practices.
Yoga teacher training courses vary in length, format, and intensity. Some programs span several weeks or months, while others may be condensed into intensive retreats or workshops. They often include a combination of lectures, practical classes, group discussions, teaching practice, and self-study assignments.
You will often hear things like 200-Hour Yoga Teacher Training or 300-Hr YTT, or even 500 hr ytt. These are some of the most common types of classes and the typical progression, obviously 200 to 300 to 500 hours is the typical progression if you want to push yourself or feel the need to achieve a higher level of certification.
Upon completion of a yoga teacher training course and meeting the requirements set by the certifying organization, participants receive a yoga teacher certification. This certificate allows you to teach yoga classes professionally. Additionally, many programs offer opportunities for personal growth and transformation. You’ll find as you delve deeper into your yoga practice you will develop a greater understanding of yourself and of others. One of the pure beauties of yoga in my opinion.
If you are newer to yoga you may not realize all the different types of yoga but there are many types of certifications you can get. I bought a Kid’s Yoga Teacher Training for my first exploration into yoga teacher training programs. My training was only 30 hours. Typically you would get your 200-hour YTT before you get a certification like this, but I just wanted to teach and mentor kids.
What Are The Benefits of Taking A Yoga Teacher Training Course?
Taking a yoga teacher training course can offer a range of benefits, whether you aspire to become a certified yoga instructor or to simply deepen your own practice. I should state that doing it just to improve your own practice is a GREAT reason to take a YTT course.
Yoga is all about self-discovery, awareness, and alignment of body and mind. A YTT course helps you practice yoga in a deeper way, learn more about the body, yoga philosophy, and how to more deeply explore yoga off the mat in your daily life.
Here are some reasons why you might consider it:
- Deepen Your Practice: Teacher training provides an immersive experience that allows you to explore yoga beyond just the physical postures. You’ll delve into philosophy, meditation, breathwork, and more, which can significantly enhance your own yoga practice.
- Learn Proper Alignment and Anatomy: Understanding the correct alignment in yoga poses and the anatomy behind them not only helps prevent injuries but also allows you to make the most out of each pose. Teacher training provides in-depth knowledge in these areas.
- Develop Teaching Skills: If you’re interested in sharing your love for yoga with others, a teacher training course equips you with the necessary skills to effectively teach a yoga class. You’ll learn how to sequence classes, cue students, provide adjustments, and create a supportive environment. I’m always passionate about teaching. I think I picked up a tick somewhere that the highest form of learning is teaching. So by learning to teach you internalize the lessons and if you can share them simply to others, then you know this stuff inside and out. It is powerful!
- Explore Yoga Philosophy and History: Yoga is more than just physical exercise; it’s a holistic practice that encompasses philosophy, spirituality, and a rich history. Teacher training offers the opportunity to delve deeper into these aspects, gaining insight into the ancient wisdom of yoga. This is an area that I found very attractive. It aligned nicely with my own, personal healing journey.
- Connect with Like-Minded Individuals: Teacher training courses often foster a sense of community among participants. You’ll meet fellow yogis who share your passion for yoga, providing support and encouragement throughout your journey. I gotta tell you… I LOVE this part of the YTT courses. I love community and yogis are just good people. I really resonate deeply with them. You too might find this a wonderful part of your yoga journey.
- Personal Growth and Transformation: Teacher training can be a transformative experience on a personal level. It challenges you physically, mentally, and emotionally, helping you break through limiting beliefs and cultivate self-awareness and mindfulness.
- Career Opportunities: Upon completion of a yoga teacher training course, you’ll have the credentials to teach yoga professionally. Whether you choose to teach full-time, part-time, as a hobby, or maybe by starting a yoga business, it opens up opportunities to share your passion and potentially earn an income doing what you love.
Ultimately, whether you decide to take a yoga teacher training course depends on your personal goals, interests, and commitment to the practice. It can be a rewarding journey that enriches your life in numerous ways.
As I said above, I took a Kid’s Yoga Teacher Training Course to mentor kids. However, what I found was I should have a stronger personal practice if I really want to teach and so I started working on building my own personal yoga practice more and more.
You know what else happened? I ended up buying a 200 hour YTT for myself to personally get better, learn more yoga poses, and dig deeper into the history and philosophy of yoga. I love the spiritual side of the yoga practice.
You can find many different yoga teacher training programs both online and in person but I think Yoga Alliance is basically the governing body that most trainings align with. If you decide to try a yoga teacher training course, you might want to look for a company or instructor that is a Registered Yoga School (RYS®) with Yoga Alliance. Then upon graduation, you can use your certification to register as a Registered Yoga Teacher through Yoga Alliance. This could help you establish yourself and build trust if/when you start looking at studio or gym classes to teach to get established or to get started.
I hope this helped you get a better idea if taking a yoga teacher training course is right for you. I may write some other articles in the future about this topic if you are interested or have more questions, share your thoughts in the comments below.
